Your Car's Windscreen Isn't Just Glass, And This Crash Test Shows Why

TL;DR
  • Malaysia has held its first live automotive windscreen crash test at MIROS in Melaka.
  • A passenger car was crashed into a frontal barrier at 48 KM/H.
  • The demonstration highlighted how a properly bonded windscreen supports the cabin and airbag system during a crash.
  • The takeaway? Windscreen replacement is not just about the glass. The adhesive and installation quality matter too.

Most of us probably think of a car windscreen as exactly that: a big piece of glass that keeps wind, rain and bugs out of our faces.

But Malaysia's first live automotive windscreen crash test has highlighted something drivers may not think about very often: your windscreen is also part of the car's safety structure.

The demonstration was conducted by Sika Automotive Aftermarket at the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) PC3 Laboratory in Melaka, where a passenger car was driven into a frontal barrier at 48 KM/H. The event was recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as Malaysia's first Automotive Windscreen Crash Test Evaluation.

So, What Does The Windscreen Actually Do?

More than you might expect.

According to the demonstration, a correctly bonded windscreen helps reinforce the vehicle cabin, support the airbag as it deploys and help keep occupants inside the vehicle during a crash.

It can also contribute to roof strength in a rollover.

The Important Bit
A replacement windscreen may look perfectly fine from the driver's seat, but the safety of the installation also depends on the adhesive used, how it was applied and whether it had enough time to cure properly.

Poor Installation Can Become A Safety Problem

The concern is not simply whether replacement glass fits properly.

Sika says a windscreen installed with the wrong adhesive, or driven before the adhesive has properly cured, can detach during a collision. If that happens, it may no longer be able to perform its intended role in supporting the airbag and maintaining the vehicle's structure.

Malaysia's hot and humid weather also matters because it can affect an adhesive's working time, making correct installation procedures particularly important.

What Matters During Windscreen Replacement?
Factor Why It Matters
Correct adhesive Helps keep the windscreen securely bonded to the vehicle body.
Proper installation Poor workmanship can compromise how securely the glass stays in place during an impact.
Curing time Driving too soon may mean the adhesive has not reached the required strength yet.

What Happened During The Test?

For the live demonstration, the vehicle was crashed into a frontal barrier at 48 KM/H at MIROS PC3 in Ayer Molek, Melaka.

The aim was to show how a correctly bonded windscreen remains in place during a crash and continues to support the vehicle's restraint and cabin structure.

Sika used its SikaTack DRIVE automotive glass adhesive for the test, which the company says has a 60-minute Minimum Drive Away Time. The product has also been tested against the US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard FMVSS 212, which evaluates whether a bonded windscreen stays in place during a crash.

Why This Matters To Malaysian Drivers

Windscreen replacement is one of those jobs many drivers may choose based mainly on price, convenience and how quickly the car can be returned.

But the crash test is a reminder that the job is not purely cosmetic.

If your windscreen ever needs replacing, it is worth asking the workshop what adhesive is being used, whether the installer is properly trained and how long you should wait before driving the car.

After all, when everything goes wrong in a crash, that piece of glass in front of you may have a much bigger job than simply giving you a clear view of the road.

Quick FAQ
Is a windscreen actually part of the car's safety structure?
Yes. A bonded windscreen can contribute to cabin rigidity, support airbag deployment and help keep occupants inside the vehicle during a crash.
Can a badly installed windscreen come loose in a crash?
According to Sika, incorrect adhesive, poor installation or insufficient curing can compromise the bond and may allow the windscreen to detach during a collision.
