Did MITI Force Tesla's Price Hike? Here’s Why Model 3 & Model Y Prices Went Up In Malaysia

If you’ve been keeping an eye on local automotive news, you probably noticed that ordering a brand-new Tesla in Malaysia just got slightly more expensive. Across the entire Model 3 and Model Y lineup, prices have quietly bumped up by RM1,400 to RM3,000 depending on the variant.

Naturally, the immediate reaction from online commenters was to point fingers at the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). After all, the government's strict new CBU EV import regulations, which mandate a minimum CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) value of RM200,000 and a minimum output of 180kW, just took effect on July 1.

It’s easy to assume the timing means MITI forced Tesla to raise prices, but that isn't what happened. Here is what actually caused the price adjustment, how much more you'll pay, and whether it changes anything for your wallet.

The Rumor vs. The Reality: Why Did Prices Change?

When MITI announced its updated framework requiring imported CBU electric vehicles to clear a RM200,000 pre-tax CIF floor and 180kW power output starting July 1, industry observers speculated that entry-level imported EVs might face massive price hikes.

However, when July 1 arrived, Tesla maintained its pricing entirely. The subsequent price bump mid-month was caused by Tesla's global pricing recalibration, a routine adjustment driven by supply chain shifts, production costs, and component shortages (such as the recent global RAM constraints affecting tech and auto industries).

💬

INDUSTRY CONTEXT: Global Memory Chip Crunch

The price revision closely follows warnings from top tech executives regarding a global memory chip shortage. Reacting to Apple CEO Tim Cook's comments on soaring component costs, Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted on X that memory chip price spikes were the "biggest price jump in anything I've ever seen," adding during Tesla's communications that "memory is an even bigger limiter than AI logic" for production (Business Insider).

Tesla operates a direct-to-consumer model in Malaysia without local franchise AP dealership markups, allowing them to adjust pricing dynamically based on global manufacturing overhead.

💡

TECH CORNER: Why Do Memory Chips & RAM Affect A Car Brand?

If you're wondering why a memory shortage impacts an EV manufacturer, remember that modern Teslas are essentially high-powered computers on wheels. From driving the central infotainment touchscreens to processing real-time camera data for Autopilot & AI self-driving systems, Teslas rely heavily on high-speed RAM and memory chips. When global AI expansion drives up hardware costs across the tech sector, manufacturing a Tesla gets more expensive.

Updated Tesla Malaysia Price List

Here is the updated breakdown of prices across the Model 3 and Model Y range compared to previous pricing:

Model & Variant New Price (OTR) Previous Price Difference
TESLA MODEL 3
Rear-Wheel Drive (Base "Rahmah") RM 149,000 RM 147,600 +RM 1,400
Premium Rear-Wheel Drive RM 171,000 RM 169,000 +RM 2,000
Premium Long Range RWD RM 187,000 RM 185,000 +RM 2,000
Performance AWD RM 232,000 RM 229,000 +RM 3,000
TESLA MODEL Y
Premium Rear-Wheel Drive RM 198,000 RM 195,450 +RM 2,550
Premium Long Range RWD RM 219,000 RM 216,450 +RM 2,550
Model Y L Premium AWD (6-Seater) RM 263,000 RM 260,000 +RM 3,000

Note: Add-on packages like Custom Paint, Wheels, Interior colors, and Enhanced Autopilot at RM16,000 remain unchanged.

Does An Extra RM1,400 To RM3,000 Actually Matter?

In percentage terms, the price increase is small, ranging from 0.95% on the base Model 3 to 1.31% on top-tier variants.

💡 REALITY CHECK: An extra RM1,400 on a car loan equals roughly RM15/month—or about the price of one boba tea or a single cup of artisanal coffee per month.

When translated to standard Malaysian auto financing (assuming a 10% down payment over a 9-year loan at ~2.5% interest rate):

  • An RM1,400 increase adds roughly ~RM15 per month.
  • An RM3,000 increase adds roughly ~RM32 per month.

Crucially, the entry-level Model 3 RWD sneaking in at RM149,000 means it stays under the psychological RM150,000 barrier. This positioning keeps it competitive against traditional C-segment ICE sedans like the Honda Civic RS, while providing electric performance.

What About Delivery Lead Times?

Pavilion-Supercharger-(5).jpg

If you're pressing 'Order' on a custom spec today, how soon will your Tesla actually land in your driveway?

  • For the Model 3, expect a 2 to 3-month wait for the base RWD model, extending to 3 to 4 months for the Long Range and Performance trims.
  • For the Model Y, the entry-level Premium RWD has the quickest turnaround at 1 to 2 months, while custom builds for the Premium Long Range RWD and Model Y L AWD sit at 3 to 4 months.

Even with this minor price revision, Tesla remains one of the few brands offering an EV under the RM200k mark in Malaysia without local CKD assembly plans.
